Washington, D.C. Explore this bustling city at leisure prior to meeting your fellow travelers for a special welcome reception and dinner. Day 2 Washington, D.C. Begin your day with a presentation on the Smithsonian Institution’s impressive collections, followed by a city sightseeing tour. Travel along Pennsylvania Avenue, the grand boulevard that connects the White House and Capitol Hill, where you’ll view the impressive U.S. Capitol and the venerable Supreme Court. Visit the Library of Congress and learn about its vast collection of more than 134 million items as well as its spectacular architecture. Enjoy a panoramic perspective of the elegant Reading Room. An engaging presentation about the city follows at your hotel. Tonight is yours to explore the city, dine at one of Washington’s fine restaurants, attend a theater performance or simply relax. Day 3 Washington, D.C. Enjoy a narrated coach tour of Washington, D.C.’s famous monuments and memorials. See the Arlington National Cemetery - the final resting place of many of our national heroes. The Shuttle Columbia astronauts are honored here at a new memorial. You can pay tribute to John F. Kennedy at the eternal flame that protects his gravesite. View the venerable monuments to Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln and stop to walk through its newest memorial, dedicated to veterans of World War II. In the afternoon, discover the treasures that lie within the National Gallery of Art during a guided tour. This famed gallery houses paintings by the Old Masters, French Impressionists and many other renowned artists. Day 4 Washington, D.C. Experience a day full of exploration and discovery when you visit two of the Smithsonian’s sixteen museums. Begin at the exciting and new National Museum of the American Indian, which possesses the largest and most extensive collection of Native American art and artifacts in the world. Educational Highlights in Washington, D.C.: As a symbol of democracy and repository of American history, Washington, D.C. holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of the American people. During talks by a curator and a historian, take a closer look at the Smithsonian Institution - the world’s largest museum complex - and discover how Washington, D.C. developed along the Potomac River. A Smithsonian historian will trace the history of the Institution beginning with the intriguing bequest by the English scientist James Smithson in 1829 to the present-day complex of museums and research centers. During a talk by a Smithsonian historian, hear the intimate story of the nation’s capital, featuring a look back at the ideal and practical issues that underlay the city’s establishment. Due to tour scheduling, flights on Day 1 should arrive prior to 4:00 PM. Hotel check-in on your day of arrival is 3:00 PM. Rooms may not be available prior to that time. Museum tours may be altered to include special exhibits. Admission to the National Gallery of Art and to all its exhibitions, tours, and other educational programs is free to the public. Smithsonian Journeys fees are based on program costs only and are unrelated to the National Gallery of Art. If you were planning to visit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, please note that it is undergoing extensive restoration and is scheduled to be closed September 2006 through summer 2008 (subject to change). Itineraries include many activities and may consist of walking on uneven terrain or significant walking at times. Some of the most unique sightseeing can mean accessing locations that restrict motorcoaches, especially in historic areas. For your comfort, we recommend bringing sturdy walking shoes. The days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilize your time on tour.
